This genus was among the first in cacti cultivation and are still one of the most commonly grown cacti. A large species, Cereus uruguayanus can grow up to approximately 5 metres tall. Large showy flowers are followed (following succesful pollination) by red edible fruit if cross-pollination occurs. This splits shortly after ripening to attracts birds and animals to disperse the seeds.
Este género se incluyó entre los primeros cultivos de cactus y aún constituye uno de los más plantados. Siendo una especie de gran porte, el Cereus uruguayanus puede alcanzar hasta los 5 metros de alto. La flor de tamaño considerable se transforma eventualmente en una fruta roja comestible en el caso que ocurra la polinización cruzada Ésta eventualmente se abre apenas madura y atrae a pájaros y mamíferos que se encargan de dispersar a sus semillas.
